Aviation Safety Under Strain During the Government Shutdown

By: Leigh-Ann Burroughs, Principal Advisor

The U.S. government shutdown is exposing cracks in our aviation system, with millions of travelers already impacted by delays and staffing shortages across the FAA and TSA.

For corporate travel leaders, this isn’t just an inconvenience; it’s a duty-of-care and operational risk issue.

Now is the time for Travel Managers to be proactive:

  1. Monitor disruption of data and safety alerts weekly.

  2. Build a budget buffer for rebooking and extended stays.

  3. Confirm your TMC’s contingency plan and traveler-communication strategy.

  4. Revisit exceptions for personal car milage and the use of rental cars for long-distance travel.

Don’t assume “the system will hold.” Travel programs must plan for stress, not just disruption.
